Mayan Everyday Life
Mayans everyday lives were busy, either with jobs, trading, producing crops and goods, ceremonies, games, dancing, writing, and astronomy and mathematics. Mayans made a writing system that used hieroglyphs, which each picture had its own meaning. Mayans were more advanced than other ancient civilizations in the Americas. The Mayans could write long stories, which they would put on their stone buildings. In addition, the Mayans also made many book which were made of wood. The Mayan were even advanced in astronomy and mathematics. They made calendars, such as a religious calendar that had 260 days. This calendar was made for the Mayans to know when certain religious ceremonies are. Another calendar had 365 days and was split into 18 months of 20 days and 5 days that were supposed to be unlucky days. This calendar was made specifically for to plan crops and to know when to harvest them. In the Mayans everyday lives they prayed to their gods. Their gods were a very important aspect of their life. They had religious ceremonies that had human sacrifices.Mayans loved music and to dance, so at religious ceremonies people play instruments such as flutes, drums and trumpets. Other people would dance. Flutes and trumpets were made from wood, seashells or clay and they used turtle shells to make drums.
Mayans had ball games called Pok-A-Tok. The object of the game is to move a hard rubber ball into a hoop with using their hands or feet. The losing team of the game is usually sacrificed.The Mayan economy was based on farming, and trading. Mayans grew many crops such as melons, beans chili peppers, and avocados, but their main crop was corn. Mayans traded in many places like Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala. Mayans traded for cotton, cacao, gold, granite, copper, feathers and salt.
